Thailand’s most joyful and iconic celebration is back — and this year, it’s bigger and more vibrant than ever. Songkran 2025, officially titled the “Maha Songkran World Water Festival,” is set to make waves across the country with cultural parades, temple ceremonies, and, of course, exhilarating water fights that bring people together in the spirit of renewal and joy.

What Is Songkran?

Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year, observed annually in mid-April. The word “Songkran” comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti, meaning ‘astrological passage,’ referring to the movement of the sun from one zodiac to another. For centuries, this special time has been a symbol of cleansing, blessings, and fresh beginnings.


Traditionally, Thais celebrate Songkran by visiting temples to make merit, pouring water over Buddha statues, and respectfully sprinkling water on the hands of elders as a gesture of gratitude and blessing. The water symbolizes purification — washing away misfortunes and welcoming a new year filled with good luck.

How Do Locals Celebrate?

While the deeper meanings of Songkran remain strong, the modern celebration blends tradition with fun. The most famous part of Songkran is the nationwide water fight — a free-spirited battle that takes over streets, towns, and cities. Locals and tourists alike arm themselves with water guns, buckets, and hoses, turning urban streets into joyful splash zones.



But Songkran isn’t just about water fights. It’s also about family reunions, paying respect to ancestors, and enjoying delicious seasonal Thai food such as khao chae (jasmine-scented rice in iced water) and fresh tropical fruits.
